In chapter 3, the authors discuss the differences in the effects both genes and
environment can have on a child.
The book states, “Children from low-income families can undoubtedly overcome these
limitations and express the full range of possibilities provided by their genetic
inheritance, but this is more likely to happen if they are provided with environmental
resources such as good educational opportunities and healthcare. “

(2) Answer each of the following questions based on your understanding of genes and
environment.
1. Reflect and discuss the role that environment (e.g., school environment,
home environment, neighborhood, school administration, teachers, students,
and parents) may have on the education of the children that attend
Strawberry Mansion.
2. How do genes and the environment play a role in the students’ education and
development? In what ways do the neighborhoods and educational policies
play a role in their development?
(3) Pose a question regarding this topic to your classmates in your original post to help
further discussion.
(4) Now review what your classmates have submitted and respond to at least one of
their original postings.

Example written by a student
1. The environment at the high school strawberry mansion has a huge affect on the
children’s education, neighborhood, school administration, teachers, and parents. The
environment at the school strawberry mansion is of poor living conditions, the
neighborhood is also. And the school administration (like the schools principal) is of low
candidates because no one wants to be a principal or teacher at the school because of its
high violence rate. And number of fights and injuries of students at strawberry mansion.
Moreover, the parents of the students at strawberry mansion feel that the children lives
are in danger and that its hard for them to learn when fights always break out and some
students become very ill after getting into a fight and are not able to go back to school
until they health gets better. The parents want there children to pass to a higher grade
level and stay away from fights. The students home environment is of poor living
conditions. One student cooks potatoes in a crook pot near his bed and all all of his clothes
remains in some bags near his bed haven’t been washed.
2. One way genes play a role in the students at strawberry mansion is one student may say
to another girl you bald headed just like your mother or your head is big just like your
fathers this is all apart of genes and heredity because the parents passes there looks down
to the children.
3. I have a question to pose to my classmates. What are some ways these students can
cope with these issues, such as poor living conditions, fights in the school, students judging
other students, injuries of students after fights, and students trying to get an education in
these conditions.
