Discussion Chapter 2: Parenting Patterns

Patterns of parenting or parenting styles (listed below) have been found to be

associated with positive and negative outcomes for a child’s social-emotional

development. These patterns are distinguished by two dimensions, responsiveness,

which includes affection, and demandingness, which sometimes is labeled as

control. See figure 2.1 on page 31 of the textbook. Thinking of your own childhood

or that of another child, how would you describe, briefly, the parent’s parenting

style in terms of demandingness and responsiveness? What appears to be the effect

of this parenting pattern on the child you chose? Ask your classmates if they agree

with you based on the evidence you provide.
