Description
Hi Class,
A bioterrorist assault occurs when a virus or bacterium is deliberately released into the public with the purpose of inflicting widespread sickness or death among a community. In 1984, the Rajneesh cult was an example of this sort of assault. On election day, the cult intended to infect citizens with Salmonella in order to influence the outcome of county elections. They poisoned salad bars at ten restaurants with S. Typhimurium multiple times before the election to train for the assault. As a consequence, a community-wide salmonellosis epidemic occurred; at least 751 cases were identified (Oh, L.2017). Many of his followers believed this behavior was justified since it reflected the beliefs instilled in them by Ma Anand, the cult leader. Within a year of the village collapsing, authorities discovered a full-fledged bioterrorism lab with salmonella strains. (L. Rowan (2017).
It is a form of bacterium that, if consumed, affects the afflicted person’s digestive system and bloodstream. Bacteria may colonize and proliferate in the gut mucosa. Diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains are all common indications and symptoms. Unless salmonella has infected the organs, the sickness normally lasts 4-7 days.
There is no one-size-fits-all therapy. However, those with severe diarrhea may need rehydration, which may include intravenous fluids. Antibiotics are not indicated in simple cases and should be used only if the illness develops or is extremely likely to spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and other organs (CDC: Salmonella Infection (2013)
Certain care must be observed while doing the decontamination technique. Prior to dealing with Salmonella Typhi, workers must wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, a lab coat, and proper facial and eye protection. (Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Emory University Research Administration, 2019).
Salmonella is often transferred through feces. The majority of the time, it is spread by food. However, any food may get infected by cross-contamination, environmental contamination, or unwashed hands of food workers (CDC: Salmonella Infection (2013) As a result, it is essential to constantly practice basic hand hygiene and, when necessary, to use gloves.
