Description

Overview: For this assignment, you will apply what you learned about rhetorical context from Reading 1 to analyze and understand the choices two writers have made in two different texts. Respond to the prompt below in full sentences, save it as a Word document, and submit it for grading by clicking on the Assignment 1 link above. Your assignment must total between 300-400 words and does NOT have to be in essay format. Simply respond to the questions. This assignment is worth 10 points and will be graded using the attached rubric.

Instructions: Click here to read “Landmark Webb telescope releases first science image–astronomers are in awe,” from Nature. Then read this tweet.

Pay attention to the similarities and differences between the tweet and the magazine/newspaper article based on:

  • the way the text looks
  • the medium or technology used (where it was posted/published)
  • the tone used
  • the words used (or not used)
  • the grammar and mechanics

Keeping the above features in mind, type your responses to the following questions:

1. How do the authors’ (alleged) backgrounds, experience, and position shape the way they write? (You may need to do a quick google search of the author to answer this question).

2. Who is the intended audience for these texts? What does each audience value and how can you tell?

3. What are the topics discussed in these two texts? How do these topics align with the authors’ interests?

4. Why are the authors writing about this topic? (to inform, persuade, or entertain)

5. Why are the authors writing these texts at this exact moment? Would these texts have been equally relevant at another time? Why or why not?
